This breed originated from Italy and at one time was widely popular and admired. The breed is far less common now but has recently begun to find preservation is Southern parts of Italy and there are breeders in parts of The United States as well. This breed was once used primarily for the hunting of large game. It is mostly found today being used as a guardian and companion dog. Also Known AsCane di Macellaio TemperamentThe Cane Corso Italiano, or Italian Mastiff, is far more threatening in its looks than its temperament. They are naturally a loyal and intelligent breed. They are easy to train. They care affectionate and have undying love for their owners. They are also a very stable breed. They do not feel the need to wander from home. They can be a protective breed, and will become aggressive if they feel that their owners our being threatened. They are not a fighting breed and should never be used as such. They can be aggressive with other dogs, but this can be broken at an early age with proper training. Dogs of this breed will not attack strangers if introduced to them in the presence of their owner. They are wonderful family pets that do excellent with children. Health ProblemsCane Corso Italianos often do not feel pain. They have an extremely high threshold for pain and thus, when they are hurt, you may realize it before they do. They are a heavy dog, and because of this bone and joint problems such as hip dysplacia are common. ExerciseA Cane Corso Italiano does well living both indoors and outdoors. They are athletic and do require regular exercise. They are best suited for long jogs with their owners. They do not need large yards to play alone or with other dogs. Dogs of this breed are often far happier playing with their families than alone. Special Grooming NeedsThe Cane Corso Italiano does not require a great deal of grooming. Only brush or comb this dog breed when necessary. Bathing is not required often. They are not a breed that sheds heavily.
