Canaan Dog Pictures and Information

Canaan Dog Description

The Canaan Dog is a medium sized breed. They can weigh between 35 and 55 pounds. They stand between 19 to 24 inches in height. They have strong and sturdy builds. Their ears are pricked and set high on the head. Their heads have a wedge shape. They have straight, harsh, and thick coats. Their coats can are usually solid black but can also be brown, white, or a patched pattern of black and brown.

Sometimes Canaan Dogs are white, but this is very rare. The Canaan Dog was originally bred in the 1930s from the wild dogs that lived in Israel. They were used, and are often still used today, as guard dogs over the flock, herding dogs, mine detector, search and rescue, and guides for the blind.

Also Known As

Kelev K’naani

Temperament

Canaan Dogs are a highly intelligent breed. They are very obedient and dependable. They are a gentle breed but also a very alert and protective one. They are wonderful with children. They can be aggressive with dogs of the same sex. They are fiercely loyal and protective. They tend to bark frequently making them an ideal watchdog. They are one of the most docile, gentlest breeds, but tend to only be this way towards one family. They are not overly fond of strangers or those they are not extremely familiar with.

Health Problems

The Canaan Dog is among one of the healthiest breeds of dog. In fact, Canaan Dogs have the lowest rate of hip dysplacia of any other breed.

Exercise

Canaan Dogs are a moderately active dog. They do require some exercise. They do best when they have a yard to occasionally play in but are suitable pets for apartment living. Canaan Dogs are active indoors but love cold weather, so it may be a good idea to let them outside more often on chilly days. Their coats protect them from extreme temperatures. They are suited for both indoor and outdoor living.

Special Grooming Needs

Canaan Dogs require little grooming. They are a naturally clean breed. Their coats do not trap odors easily so bathing is to be done only when necessary. They do shed heavily during the changing of the seasons. During those shedding months brushing should be done once or twice a week.
