Bluetick Coonhound Description

The Bluetick Coonhound is a breed that has a short coat that is thick. The dog gets its name from the blue patches that are present in the coat. The bluish color effect is created by the combination of black on a white base color. The feet of these dogs should be compact, and the hind legs should be strong and well defined.

These dogs are known for their eyesight, and they have successfully been used by hunters at night. The feet of this breed should have a color that is similar to the muzzle. The ears should be shaped like roses, and must fall to the sides of the head.

Temperament

The Bluetick Coonhound is a breed that is known for its intelligence. It is loyal to those that care for it, and it makes a great family pet. These dogs are quick to defend their owners, and will behave best with mature children. These dogs will be wary around strangers, and may easily get into fights with other dogs. It is important for owners to make sure these dogs are socialized while they are puppies. Because these dogs are natural hunters, they should be monitored when they are around pets that are not dogs. The Bluetick Coonhound is tough, and can work on a wide variety of terrain in adverse weather conditions.

Health Problems

There are no known health problems that are specific to the Bluetick Coonhound. These dogs are healthy, and will have a maximum life expectancy of 12 years.

Exercise

The Bluetick Coonhound is a breed that is designed to hunt. Because of this, it is important for owners to give them extensive amounts of exercise. These dogs must be exercised each day, and are not good for owners who don’t have the time to give them the exercise they need. This is not a breed for apartment dwellers. They must at least be placed in a sizeable yard. When they are taken for walks, they should not be unleashed, as they have an instinct to hunt and fight with other dogs. These dogs have powerful scents, and will run off in the direction of a scent that they find interesting.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs do not need large amounts of grooming. Owners will want to brush the coat every so often, and the ears should be kept clean so that they do not become infected. Not much is known about their shedding patterns; though it is likely they don’t shed much because of their short coats.
