Black and Tan Coonhound Description

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a large dog which features a muscular build. It has a head with an excellent shape, and the top part of the skull is parallel with the top part of the muzzle. The nostrils are dark and wide, and the ears are shaped like pendants. The Black and Tan Coonhound has a strong tail that it will carry valiantly. The teeth of this breed should form a scissors bite. The eyes will feature a circular shape, and they should either be brown or hazel in color. The length of the body should be equal to or slightly longer than the height of the dog. The Black and Tan Coonhound has a coat which is short, firm, and smooth. As the name implies, the coat of this dog should be black and tan in color.

The Black and Tan Coonhound is an American breed that was produced by mixing the Foxhound with the Bloodhound. It is proficient in hunting raccoons. In addition to this, these dogs have also been used to hunt deer, bears, and mountain lions. This is a tough breed that is able to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Temperament

The Black and Tan Coonhound is a dog with exceptional levels of intelligence. It makes an excellent companion, and was bred to hunt. Because of this, it is highly alert, and will work hard to please its master. It has been said that the Black and Tan Coonhound can be aggressive, but will obey its master under all circumstances. These dogs can be protective of those they care about, and will be cautious around strangers. These dogs will behave best with older children, as they can play roughly. Owners must train these dogs consistently, and they may be aggressive with dogs they are not familiar with.

Health Problems

The Black and Tan Coonhound should not be fed too much food. This breed is known for developing hip dysplasia. These dogs have a maximum life expectancy of 12 years.

Exercise

This is a breed that was bred to hunt. Owners will want to give it excessive amounts of exercise. These dogs love to run, play, and walk. If you decide to let them run free, it should only be done in a safe area, as these dogs will run in the direction of the first interesting scent they pick up.

Special Grooming Needs

Owners will want to brush these dogs whenever it is necessary. The ears should be cleaned on a regular basis, as they are prone to infection.
