Belgian Shepherd Malinois Pictures and Information

Belgian Shepherd Laekenois Description

The Belgian Shepherd Laekenois has a wiry coat that gives it a distinctive appearance. The colors of the coat should be fawn, black, or mahogany. The coat can grow up to two inches long, and the ears are small in size. The coat of the Laekenois gives it a shaggy appearance. It has powerful hindquarters, and the eyes will be dark in color. The fur on the tail has a bushy look, and these dogs will also have wide chests. The front legs of the Laekenois should be straight, and the feet will have a circular shape. While it is optional for the front dewclaws of these dogs to be removed, the dewclaws on the back legs should always be removed.

The Laekenois is a very rare breed, and as the name suggests, originates in Belgium.

Also Known As

Chien de Berger Belge

Temperament

The Belgian Shepherd Laekenois is an intelligent dog that is quick to follow the commands of its owner. These dogs have a serious demeanor, and are both protective and alert. They are also known for being territorial. Because these dogs can be shy, they should be exposed to people or other dogs while they are puppies. It is not necessary to train them sternly. The Laekenois makes an excellent guard dog, and is often used by police. They can behave well with children if they are properly trained. They should not be kept in kennels for long periods of time.

Health Problems

The Laekenois has no major ailments or disorders. They may develop skin allergies, and hip dysplasia may also be seen as well. This breed has a maximum lifespan of about 15 years.

Exercise

This breed of dogs were bred to work, and they enjoy being active. Owners will want to give them lots of exercise, and they should be allowed to run off the leash in a safe area. They can live in an apartment if they are taken to exercise on a consistent basis, but it is best to have a medium sized yard. While this dog can thrive in any climate, it prefers places that have cooler temperatures.

Special Grooming Needs

Owners will want to make sure the coat of the Laekenois is cut twice a year. Any dead hair should be removed, but make sure the coat is never trimmed to close, as it could be ruined. These dogs should only be bathed when it is necessary, and the Laekenois will only shed a small amount of hair.
