Belgian Shepherd Groenendael (Belgian Sheepdog) Description

The coat of the Belgian Shepherd Groenendael has a medium length. It will be prominent around the neck, and it will also feature an undercoat that is thick. While most of the coat should be black in color, a bit of white is allowed. These dogs should have eyes that are shaped like almonds, and they should be brown in color.

Temperament

The Belgian Shepherd Groenendael is one of the most popular breeds in Belgium. They are highly intelligent, and will display a serious disposition. These dogs can be territorial. It is important for owners to make sure they are socialized while they are puppies. While owners will want to train them firmly, they should never be harsh. The Belgian Shepherd Groenendael is well known for being an obedient dog. They have been successfully used by police, and they can function as excellent guard dogs. These dogs can behave well with children, and they will want to be a part of the family.

Health Problems

These dogs are healthy, are not prone to developing a large number of health problems. Despite this, some Belgian Shepherd Groenendaels have been known to develop eye problems, epilepsy, or allergies. In addition to this, elbow dysplasia has been seen as well. Owners will want to make sure these dogs are not fed too much food, as they can gain weight within a short period of time. The maximum life expectancy for this breed is 14 years.

Exercise

These dogs were bred to work, and will need large amounts of exercise. They are used to living outside, and owners will want to let it run free in a safe area. While the Belgian Shepherd Groenendael can live indoors without much of a problem, it is important for owners to make sure it gets the necessary exercise. Special Grooming Needs

The Belgian Shepherd Groenendael has a long coat that owners will need to give large amounts of care. It should be combed or brushed each day, and more care will need to be provided if the dog is shedding fur. Any mats that appear should be removed, and fur that grows between the toes should be cut. These dogs will shed large amounts of fur each year.
