Bavarian Mountain Hound Description

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is a breed that originates from Germany. Like the Bloodhound, they are known for their acute scense of smell. This is a very old breed which has existed in Europe for at least 500 years. They have heads which are large, and their skulls are wide. They feature a nosebridge that should have a small curve. These dogs will have lips that should completely cover their mouth. The nose should be red or black in color. Their ears are moderate in length, and are broad at the base. They have medium sized eyes which are not too large or small.

The Bavarian Mountain Hound has a strong chest, and their tails should always hang towards the ground. These dogs have short coats which will be fawn or a mixture of red and brown. These dogs originate from very primitive canines who were hunters. They have been used for hundreds of years to track down game, and their ability to smell allows them to smell the blood of a wounded animal from long distances. However, this is a fairly rare breed, even today.

Temperament

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is fast and brave. It can adapt to a wide variety of terrain, and this includes places which are rugged. These dogs are excellent hunters, and were bred primarily for this purpose. Despite this, these dogs are also calm and patient, and will be affectionate to those that care for them. These dogs should only be purchased by owners who are proficient at training dogs.

Health Problems

There are no known health problems which are specific to this breed. Any health problems they have can be found in most other dogs. Not much is known about their lifespan, though they will generally live as long as other hounds, which is about 10 to 13 years.

Exercise

The Bavarian Mountain Hound is a breed which needs large amounts of exercise. It is a dog which was bred to hunt in the woods, and will not function well living in a city. Owners will want to make sure they have large amounts of space. However, they will need to be supervised because their strong scent abilities will cause them to run off in any direction where they smell something interesting.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs don’t have elaborate coats, but they will still need to be brushed each day. These dogs should only be bathed when it is needed.
