Basset bleu de Gascogne Pictures and Information

Basset bleu de Gascogne Description

The Basset bleu de Gascogne could be described as a slightly less heavy Basset Hound. The two breeds are almost identical in appearance, with only minor differences. They weigh on average 33 pounds and stand 10 to 14 inches in height. Their legs are straight, as opposed to the Basset Hound, which usually sports a bowlegged stance or have feet that turn out. They have long and droopy ears as well as eyes that also droop and are usually black. They have very broad chests and a Basset bleu de Gascogne’s coat is very short. Usually, their coats are black with white spots but there are variations to this as well. Their coat is usually a light black, giving it an almost blue color in the sun. Their feet are almost always pure white.

The breed is one of six French Bassets and historians can date the breed back to the mid-1600’s. They were first used for hunting but now are most commonly bred for companionship.

Temperament

Basset bleu de Gascogne is a very intelligent breed which makes obedience training is quite simple for the breed to understand. They are gentle and trustworthy, which make them an excellent family pet. They do well with children of all ages. But, they do have a keen hunting sense and often hunt rodents, so you might expect a few surprises at times. They do well with other dogs as long as the other dogs are not overly hyper. They can do well with other pets, such as cats, if they are brought into the household at a young age.

Health Problems

Basset bleu de Gascogne’s are prone to disk disease. Their long ears also make them more prone to ear infections than some other breeds.

Exercise

The Basset bleu de Gascogne breed require a moderate amount of exercise. They enjoy long walks as opposed to runs and are best suited to be walked on a leash, as they will usually go wherever their nose tells them to. This can prove to be a problem when they are let loose. They are well suited for apartment living.

Special Grooming Needs

Basset bleu de Gascogne’s have coats that are very easy to care for. Occasional brushing may be necessary. It is imperative that their ears are kept clean. To avoid ear infections it is recommended that their ears be washed thoroughly twice a week.
