The Basset Artesian Normand has a very broad chest with a very short coat. Their coats are usually tri-colored consisting of orange, tan, and white, with their feet being almost always pure white. The breed is one of six French Bassets and their lineage can be traced back to the early 1600’s. They were first used for hunting dogs, but now are most commonly bred for companionship. They are gentle and trustworthy, which make them an excellent family pet. They do well with children of all ages. A Basset Artesian Normand does have a keen hunting sense and will often hunt rodents. They do well with other dogs, as long as the other dogs are not overly hyper. They can do well with other pets, such as cats, if they are brought into the household at a young age, allowing the Basset Artesian Normand to grow with the new pet. Health ProblemsBasset Artesian Normands are prone to disk disease. Their long ears also make them more prone to ear infections than some other breeds, so it is essential to keep a close eye on their ears and keep them clean. ExerciseBasset Artesian Normands require a moderate amount of exercise. This breed enjoys long walks as opposed to runs. They are best suited to be walked on a leash, as they will usually go wherever their nose tells them to which can prove to be a problem when they are let loose. They are well suited for apartment living as they are not too large and do not require a large amount of space to exercise in. Special Grooming NeedsBasset Artesian Normands have coats that are very easy to care for. Occasional brushing may be necessary. It is imperative that their ears are kept clean. To avoid ear infections it is recommended that their ears be washed thoroughly twice a week.
