Australian Cattle Dog Pictures and Information

Australian Cattle Dog Description

The Australian Cattle Dog is a compact breed that has a muscular body. It has a lot of agility, and it should have a tail with a curve that reaches the hock. The head should be wide with a slightly circular shape, and the eyes will have the shape of ovals and should be dark brown in color. The teeth of the Australian Cattle Dog should form a scissors bite. The coat of this breed is thick and is designed to protect it from extreme weather. The coat has two parts, and this is the thick undercoat and the lighter outer coat. The ideal coat should have red or blue speckles, and tan may be seen on the body as well. Black is not a desirable coat color for this breed.

The Australian Cattle Dog was bred in the 19th century by European settlers in Australia who needed to herd cattle on their ranches. Because many of the dogs that were brought from Europe could not efficiently deal with the climate and working conditions, the settlers decided to produce a new breed that could assist them.

Temperament

As the name implies, the Australian Cattle Dog was bred for herding cattle. Because of this, it is not a dog that owners will want to leave alone in an enclosed area. It is a highly intelligent dog, and will become bored easily. Once this occurs, the dog may begin exhibiting negative behaviors. These dogs need to consistently receive attention from their owners. They are highly protective, and make excellent guard dogs. They are highly obedient, and are frequently displayed at dog shows. However, these dogs are best for a person who is living alone. They are not very good with children they are not familiar with.

Health Problems

The Australian Cattle Dog may become deaf, and may also develop PRA or hip dysplasia. These dogs have a life expectancy of about 15 years.

Exercise

These dogs have large amounts of endurance, and will need large amounts of exercise. In fact, exercise is crucial with this breed. If the Australian Cattle Dogs is not given sufficient amounts of exercise, it can become bored, and may become destructive. These dogs will not function properly in an apartment, and must be kept in a large yard. They will perform best when they are working.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs have short coats that do not require large amounts of maintenance. They can be groomed by simply using a sturdy brush on their coats whenever it becomes necessary. These dogs may shed one or two times a year.
