Anatolian Shepherd Dog Description

While lips should hang down a little, the teeth should have the form of a scissors bite. The ears should be black and color, and should also have the shape of triangles. The color of the eyes should either be brown or gold. These dogs should have a smooth coat, and the neck should be strong. This is a dog breed which originates in Turkey.

Temperament

The Anatolian Shepherd is a dog which is highly alert. It is protective, and though it can be easy to train, it is not a breed that is recommended for novices. These dogs should only be purchased by people who will lead them. While these dogs are courageous they are not too aggressive. While they are loving to their owners, they will be wary of individuals they are not familiar with. This dog will not accept people it is not familiar with until its owner has confirmed that it must. These dogs will not allow unknown people to enter their territories unless they know them. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog can also be strong willed.

Health Problems

This breed is known for developing entropion, hypothyroidism, and hip dysplasia. These dogs don’t have the strong immune systems that are seen in other breeds, and should be given a large number of vaccinations while they are puppies. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog has a maximum life expectancy of 15 years.

Exercise

These dogs need excessive amounts of exercise. They can exercise themselves if they are allowed to run free in a large area that is secure. They will not function well in apartments, and owners will want to make sure they have plenty of space. Because they are wary of strangers, they should always be placed in a secure yard.

Special Grooming Needs

These dogs do not require excessive amounts of grooming. The coat will need to be well brushed once a year when it begins to shed. Little care needs to be given to the coat for most of the year. These dogs shed heavy amounts of fur.
