The American Staffordshire Terrier is a breed that originated in England as a descendant of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. The American version of this dog is a bit larger than the English Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and though these dogs were used in dog fights, much of the vicious traits have been bred out of them. TemperamentDespite their appearance, these dogs are cheerful and sociable. They enjoy being around people, and they are exceptionally reliable. The American Staffordshire Terrier makes the ideal family pet. It is great with children, and it will work hard to please those that care for it. The American Staffordshire Terrier is a natural guard dog. When it is threatened, it will fight viciously, and can withstand large amounts of pain. It is important for owners to socialize these dogs while they are puppies, or they may become overly aggressive. It can be hard for owners to housebreak this breed. Health ProblemsThe American Staffordshire Terrier is a breed which is generally healthy. They are prone to developing heart problems, and they may also get hip dysplasia as well. These dogs have a maximum life expectancy of 15 years. ExerciseThese dogs are highly energetic, and will need large amounts of exercise. When they are in the public or near other dogs, owners should keep them on a leash, as they can get into fights easily. These dogs can function well in apartments if owners exercise them consistently. They will also do fine in a yard, and enjoy being in warm environments. Special Grooming NeedsThese dogs have smooth coats that can be groomed easily. Owners will want to brush them on a consistent basis, and they should only be bathed when they need it. When the coat is rubbed with a towel, it will display an impressive gloss. The American Staffordshire Terrier will shed standard amounts of fur.
