American Hairless Terrier Pictures and Information

American Hairless Terrier Description

The American Hairless Terrier has a body shape that is similar to the Rat Terrier. These dogs are highly muscular, and they should have a chest that is prominent. The shoulders should be powerful, and the legs should be well defined. When the dog is active, its ears should stand upright. The tail should have an extensive length, and if they are docked, this is considered to be a fault.

The acceptable skin colors for the American Hairless Terrier are black, golden, pink, gray, or red. As the name implies, these dogs do not have a coat, and are nearly hairless. However, these dogs do have standard eyebrows.

Temperament

Like many terriers, the American Hairless Terrier is active and playful. They are affectionate with their masters, and they make excellent pets for virtually anyone. They are also great with children, but owners will want to make sure they are properly socialized while they are young. One thing distinctive feature that this dog has is its ability to sweat. This will occur when they are frightened. While they can be somewhat territorial, they are friendly with strangers, and do not make good guard dogs. These dogs cannot swim well, and owners will want to watch them around bodies of water. While the American Hairless Terrier is active, it does not bark too much.

Health Problems

These dogs may get rashes on their skin, and it is important for owners to make sure they are protected from sunlight. To do this, it is best to use sunscreen or simply cover the dog with a shirt. These dogs will also need to be protected in cold climates. While owners will notice that these dogs may get pimples, they will vanish by themselves.

Exercise

These dogs love to run and play, and owners will want to unleash them in a safe area. Owners will also want to take them on long walks, but they should not be allowed to play near bodies of water, since they are not skilled swimmers. These dogs will function best when they are allowed to live indoors. Because they don’t have a coat, the climate can be hard for them to tolerate in summer or winter months.

Special Grooming Needs

Since these dogs don’t have a coat, they do not need large amounts of grooming. However, owners will want to use sunscreen during the summer months, as the sunlight can cause them to get rashes. In the winter, they should be covered. It is also important to make sure their nails are cut consistently. If the dog gets cuts or bruises, hydrogen peroxide should be administered.
