Afghan Hound Pictures and InformationAfghan Hound Description
They are native to Sinai, Egypt and were first used as herding dogs and watchdogs, but are most commonly owned now for companionship. They have become a popular breed for showing because of their aristocratic beauty. An Afghan Hound has become one of the more popular breeds lately due to their grand stature and their laid back personalities. Also Known AsBaluchi Hound TemperamentThe Afghan Hound is a breed that is usually very sweet in nature. They are loyal and affectionate and are often referred to as “the King of Dog’s” because of their majestic appearance and dignified attitudes. They can be very distant around strangers but usually warm up quickly once the feel they are not being threatened. They are excellent protectors and do well with both younger and older children. But, they are not recommended for households with very young children because they can easily become depressed if they feel they are not gave the proper amount of attention. They do well with other pets in most cases, but can be wary of larger dogs. An owner just needs to ensure that their Afghan Hound gets a lot of attention due to their personality, and that they love to be the center of attention. Health ProblemsAfghan Hounds have a very low tolerance of pain. They are usually a very healthy breed, but the slight falls or accidents can affect the breed more so than others simply because of their low tolerance for pain. So, it is recommended that they not be put in a position where they can endure falls or other types of injuries. ExerciseAfghan Hounds require a good amount of exercise. They almost never do well in small spaces. They are a rambunctious breed and therefore need plenty of room to run around and play. They are very inactive indoors. Although the breed must have time to play outdoors they do much better sleeping indoors with their family. Special Grooming NeedsAfghan Hounds require a great amount of grooming. Their long coats need to be washed a least once a week. Their coats must be brushed but only when damp. Because they have such long hair on their faces and feet it may be necessary to bathe daily. Usually, Afghan Hounds require professional grooming.
